Additional info/contents	SW-Grade orchestra: 4 The piece "Four Temperaments for Tuba" was written at the request of British tuba virtuoso Stephen Sykes to fill a gap in the repertoire. The composition was created in collaboration with the composer and was designed to be both technically demanding and melodically accessible for good tuba players. The cadenza was composed and played by Stephen Sykes, with the composer's permission. However, soloists can compose their own cadenza, which should end with bars 162 and 163, either as written or transposed down an octave. The European premiere of "Four Temperaments for Tuba" took place on October 6, 1999 in Plymouth, England, with Stephen Sykes as soloist and the Royal Marines Orchestra conducted by Lt. Col. Peter Rutterford in the Pavilions. In the United States, the piece was first performed on December 17, 1999 in Chicago during Stephen Sykes' Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic with the VanderCook College of Music Symphony Orchestra conducted by Geoffrey Brand.
