Additional info/contents The suite 'The Ransom' was composed in 1992 as a commission for the railway workers' brass band in Nes, based on Dubrovay's opera of the same name with the libretto by Ferenc Baranyi. The bizarre story of the one-act play, which is also the basis for the suite Das Lösegeld, takes place in our time at an unspecified location.

The prime minister of an unspecified country is kidnapped by the underground organization of frustrated women because a picture published in the newspapers shows him as an attractive man. When it turns out that the prime minister is impotent, the women demand a ransom of only 50 dollars plus expenses. To avoid a scandal, the government enters into heated negotiations with the kidnappers and asks them to demand at least 5 million dollars. But the women remain adamant: they insist on being reimbursed only for their expenses, in order to protect their honour. Finally, an agreement is reached: the ransom of one billion dollars is used to set up a foundation that will enable the import of large quantities of powerful men. The country is bankrupt, but the government's good name is saved.

The first movement of the suite is an arrangement of a grotesque quartet of ministers desperately negotiating with each other, followed in the second movement by a love song "Aria" in which the women are portrayed. The "Scherzo" (third movement) is a humorous duet between one of the women and the prime minister. She sings him a lullaby in the hiding place of the kidnappers. The story ends with a "happy end", the fourth movement is entitled Viva il Präsidente!.

The opera "The Ransom" by László Dubrovay and the suite of the same name for top-level wind orchestra

"The Ransom" is an opera by the Hungarian composer László Dubrovay that impresses with its dramatic plot and expressive music. Based on this opera, Dubrovay has created a suite for top-level wind orchestra that captures the opera's main musical themes and emotional climaxes.

László Dubrovay is known for his ability to create emotional depth and dramatic tension in his works. "The Ransom" is an opera that deals with themes such as power, intrigue and human weaknesses. The music of the opera is rich in contrasts and uses a wide range of orchestral colors and dynamic expressions.

The Suite for Wind Orchestra consists of these movements:
I. Allegretto: The first movement of the suite, "Allegretto," opens the work with a lively and snappy melody. This movement reflects the introductory atmosphere of the opera, where the plot and characters are introduced. The music is characterized by rhythmic clarity and a light but energetic orchestration that immediately draws the listener into the musical action.

II. Allegretto appassionata: The second movement, "Allegretto appassionata," brings a more intense and passionate mood. Here the drama of the opera is felt, with dynamic build-ups and emotional climaxes. Dubrovay uses expressive melodies and dense harmonic structures to portray the characters' deep feelings and inner conflicts.

III. Allegretto: In the third movement, "Allegretto," the music returns to a lighter and more playful atmosphere. This passage could reflect a quieter phase of the opera, where the plot develops and the characters interact with each other. The orchestration here is again clear and transparent, with a focus on melodic lines and rhythmic precision.

IV. Lento: The fourth movement, "Lento," is a slow and emotive section of the suite. This music could represent a sad or pensive scene in the opera, where the characters are confronted with their inner struggles. Dubrovay uses drawn-out phrases and gentle harmonies here to create a melancholy and introspective mood.

V. Allegro: The concluding fifth movement, "Allegro," brings the suite to a powerful and energetic end. This music possibly reflects the climax of the opera, with dramatic twists and an intense final sequence. The orchestration here is particularly rich and complex, with fast tempos and virtuoso passages that challenge the technical skills of the wind orchestra.

The Suite for Wind Orchestra from "The Ransom" is an excellent example of Dubrovay's ability to translate complex emotional and dramatic content into music. The individual movements offer a wide range of moods and expressions, ranging from lively and playful to profound and intense. The music is rich in melodic ideas and harmonic developments that immerse listeners in the world of opera.

László Dubrovay's opera "The Ransom" and the resulting Suite for top-level wind orchestra are impressive works that captivate with their musical diversity and emotional depth. The suite summarizes the essential elements of the opera and offers a gripping listening experience that impressively showcases the dramatic power and artistic richness of Dubrovay's music. It places high demands on the musicians and is a worthwhile piece for any top-level wind orchestra that wants to showcase its versatility and technical skills.
