Additional info/contents Setting Jonathan Swift's book "Gulliver's Travels" (1726) to music presented a real challenge. Even though the piece doesn't entirely adhere to the literary content, it nevertheless represents a wide range of the elements that appear. The ship's doctor, Gulliver, experiences four different (fictional) stations on his journey and encounters the various inhabitants and their customs. The four movements bear the names of the regions visited:
I. Lilliput: The enterprising Lilliputians are introduced in a playful, intimate theme.
II. Brobdingnag: In the land of the "Brobdingnag," Gulliver is abducted by monstrous giants, whose approach can be heard in the bass section. This theme runs through the entire movement, intensifying and thus creating tension.
III. Laputa: Laputa is a floating island whose inhabitants have tilted heads. The unusual, dreamy atmosphere is conveyed particularly well here.
IV. The Houyhnhnms: The last land Gulliver travels to is that of the Houyhnhnms, where intelligent and venerable horses rule over the simple and underdeveloped people (Yahoos). In the brilliant opening, the trumpets represent the galloping horses; the following magnificent theme on the horns and trombones symbolizes the primitive Yahoos. The entire composition concludes with a grand finale.
The composer deliberately kept the difficulty level of Gulliver's Travels low. Nevertheless, he believes that this work will appeal to many orchestras due to its colorful orchestration (cues are provided where necessary). It is particularly interesting because of the simple and clear theme, which builds on the imaginative foundation of this story.
