Additional info/contents In Scotland, the Loch Ness Monster is a hot topic, but the American state of Montana enjoys a comparable phenomenon called Montana Nessie.
In the western part of this remote state lies Flathead Lake: a lake 45 kilometers long and 24 kilometers wide. In several places it is more than 100 meters deep. Nessie's discovery takes us back to 1889, when Captain James Kerr, aboard the passenger ship U.S. Grant, was surprised by an unknown ship that suddenly approached his ship across Flathead Lake. However, it turned out that it was not a ship, but an indefinable animal of immense size. From that moment on, life in and around Flathead Lake was never the same again. The composer was inspired by the story and summed up the events in a symphonic poem, but from a surprising point of view: that of the monster.

The exciting beginning allows us to follow the monster in its natural environment. The fast follow-up movement shows Nessie of Montana trotting and frolicking through the forests and prairies of Montana. From her home, she enjoys everything around her to the fullest. This section ends abruptly with a brief climax (glockenspiel). The English horn solo marks a new phase in the monster's life. The presence of humans has a paralyzing effect and the frightening atmosphere of the slow movement is deeply felt. The monster watches the ship and gently teases it. Abhorring sounds force the ship to retreat. The moving musical continuation shows the triumphant monster dancing an ironic waltz. The monster's fear and anger at the violation of his freedom run like a thread through the piece and develop into the work's closing theme.
