The Imperial March
or Darth Vader's theme (also Imperial March) is a musical theme from the soundtracks to the Star Wars movies. The composition was written by John Williams for Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and is considered one of the best-known symphonic themes from the field of film as well as a popular example of Leitmotivtechnik (Darth Vader's Theme). The work was premiered by the Boston Pops Orchestra on April 29, 1980, five days before the release of the film.
The piece is characterized by the hard, dull quarter beats in the basses (cellos, double basses and tuba) as well as the abrupt harmonic reversals. These sounds create a gloomy, ominous mood. The piece fluctuates from bar to bar between classical tonality and atonal sound sequences, already in the first bar the distant keys G minor and E flat minor sound one after the other, followed in bar 6 by an abrupt return to the far-off C sharp minor.
The catchy rhythm, with its dotted eighths and the resting point on a half note, repeats itself first every two bars, before being pushed forward with sixteenths. At the same time, the upper voices perform octave jumps.
