Programme notes: additional text

Stylistically, the overture can be regarded as typical of its time, since it possesses all the characteristics of that era. In terms of quality, it comes close to the works of Méhul, Cherubini or Gossec. Musically, too, a revolution was to take place. These composers strove to break out of the prescribed forms of classicism and to go their own way, which opened the way to romanticism.

This overture is also impressive proof that Catel is to be regarded as a special master of the art of orchestration. He knew how to use new and, for the time, bold timbres with fine feeling.

"The present Ouverture must represent one of the most charming and accomplished compositions for the wind orchestra of the late 18th century - the influence of Mozart cannot be overlooked. It is composed in sonata-form, with slow introductions."

This slow introduction is a stylistic device that can also be found in the works of contemporaries such as Méhul and Devienne, and which Jean Baptiste Lully had already introduced in the 17th century. This is intended to convey a serious to tragic mood.
The Ouverture in C was composed for somewhat extended military music, i.e. harmony music. It was premiered at the "Temple of Reason" by the Paris Army Orchestra on the occasion of the second anniversary of the birth of the Republic.
