Programme notes: additional text

Andreas Hofer was born on 22 November 1767 at Sandhof near St. Leonhard in Passeier in the county of Tyrol. He died on 20 Feb 1810 in Mantua, Kingdom of Italy. Hofer was an innkeeper in the inn "Am Sand" - hence also known as the "Sandwirt". He was also active as a horse and wine dealer. As leader of the Tyrolean uprising of 1809, he is considered a freedom fighter against the Bavarian and French occupation of his homeland. Hofer is often honoured locally - especially by the German-speaking population - with numerous monuments as a national hero and in a transfiguring way also as a national hero.
