The three movements of Jan de Haan's composition first describe the preparations for the journey, then – fast-paced and full of rhythmic surprises – the perilous sea voyage, and finally the blossoming joy and euphoria when the words "land is in sight" are finally heard. Suspense and adventure until the last note! Composer Jan de Haan wrote Hispaniola on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the death of Christopher Columbus, who lived from 1451 to 1506.
