Additional info/contents Franz von Suppé (1819-1895) is considered the true founder of Viennese operetta. However, even in good reference works, he is only mentioned in passing today. The young Franz von Suppé came to Vienna from Dalmatia, where he initially composed individual pieces of music for performances in Viennese suburban theaters, providing music for popular farces, folk plays, and ballets. With increasing success, he also composed his own stage works, especially for a whole series of one-act operas, of which we mostly still know the overtures today, such as "Die schöne Galathee" (The Beautiful Galatea). In 1879, after "Fatinitza," he achieved his greatest success with the operetta "Boccaccio." The catchy "Boccaccio March" originates from this work.
