Additional info/contents The Order of the Temple is a musical fresco about these warrior monks who have given birth to endless legends.

The Order of the Temple was one of the dominant Christian military orders in the Middle Ages. It was founded in 1119 in the aftermath of the First Crusade in order to defend the Holy Land and to ensure the safety of many Christians who made the pilgrimage to Jerusalem. The Order reigned supreme for two centuries, during which its fortune was closely entwined with those of the Crusades. The Templars became the primary bankers for the Holy See and royal houses, arousing a lot of envy and jealousy.

The Order of the Temple opens with the "knights" theme - a leitmotiv that runs through the entire composition. The ensuing heroic second theme, with its syncopated rhythms and asymmetrical measures is reminiscent of the Crusade. After a short recitative-style passage, the music changes in mood and becomes more serene. The solo Flute unveils a new melodic line which expresses deep faith, beautifully underlined by the modal inflexions of the harmony. Finally, the Clarinet section (tutti) plays the Chorale for Peace bringing new light to the work, the sparkling light which belongs to the major mode. This chorale is eventually taken up by the whole band, leading to lively grand finale.
