Additional info/contents	The 9th Symphony in E minor op. 95 was composed during Dvorák's stay in America. It became known during the artist's lifetime as his 5th symphony and is today one of his most popular and most performed orchestral works. The composer called the second movement "legend". According to Dvořáks, this moving funeral song was inspired by a scene from Longfellow's poem "Hiawatha" and sets to music Hiawatha's lament for the dead, whose faithful companion Minnehaha has passed away. This American poetry had come to know Dvořák through the translation by his compatriot Josef Vaclav Sladek. In painful melancholy, the English horn sings the main melody, with which this movement begins and ends in sublime calm. The melody of the slow movement is so nostalgic, however, that one may suspect that the composer wanted to express his homesickness for far-away Bohemia. Quelle/Source: Wikipedia
