Additional info/contents Giacomo Puccini was commissioned to write a second opera after the resounding success of Le Villi. The original four-act opera, the grand opera Edgar, written to a libretto by Ferdinando Fontana, received only moderate applause at its premiere at La Scala in Milan in 1899 - there were initially only three performances. Of all the planned performances in the following two years, only one took place, namely in Puccini's hometown of Lucca. The work was well received there. Nevertheless, the composer decided to make drastic changes to "Edgar": the most far-reaching was to reduce the opera to three acts again. He also changed some arias, characters and instrumental parts. In its revised form, the opera was even worse received than before. Material from the deleted fourth act was later used in "Tosca" (the duet "Amoro so' per te"), but Puccini never felt it necessary to defend "Edgar" - which he did very well with other less successful operas, such as "La Rondine" and "Suor Angelica". On a piano reduction for his friend Sybil Seligman, he even verbalised the title to "E Dio ti Guarda da quest'opera" (literally: 'may God protect you from this opera'). This did not stop Arturo Toscanini from playing the third act RequiemĈternam for the composer's funeral in the cathedral in Milan on 3 December 1924.

The third act requiem is played to the long funeral procession of the supposed corpse of Edgar - the confused young man wavering between the love of the virtuous Fidelia and the exotic Tigrana. The crowd hails him as a hero, but a monk claims Edgar betrayed his country for a few pieces of gold. When the soldiers go to desecrate the corpse, they discover that the coffin is empty. The monk himself reveals himself to be Edgar. He wants to flee with his faithful Fidelia, but the vengeful Tigrana attacks him and stabs Fidelia. Edgar bends over the corpse of his beloved in pain, while Tigrana is arrested and the crowd sinks into prayer.
