Programme notes: additional text

The galop "Bahn frei!" by Eduard Strauss dates from 1869. The world premiere took place on 17 February 1869 in a "befitting" setting, at the Ball der Beamten der k.k. privilegierten Nordbahn. Eduard Strauss also dedicated his composition to the Comité of this ball. The piano edition was published by the Viennese publishing house Spina in April 1869 and the orchestra edition followed in autumn of this year. "Bahn frei" has remained well-known and popular to this day and played a special role in the anniversary of "150 Years of Railways in Austria". Eduard Strauss once again devoted himself musically to the theme of the railway, and he published a fast polka "Mit Dampf" (With Steam) in 1872, his Opus 70. His Polka francaise Opus 166 from 1878, "Reiselust" (Wanderlust), is probably also to be understood as a musical homage to the railway, which was already well established at the time.
