Additional info/contents	Four very different movements come together to form a whole in this divertimento. Each movement embodies its own musical character. The first movement, the Prélude, fulfils the role of an overture: with it, the curtain of the play rises, so to speak. It begins with brilliant motifs, contains a quieter lyrical middle section and returns to the brilliance of the beginning towards the end. In the contrasting meditation that follows, an introverted song by the oboe, and later also by the flute and horn, is accompanied by orchestral colors that shimmer between dark and light. This is followed by a procession, but not a procession of the nobles like in Rimsky-Korsakov, more of a modified second-line procession from New Orleans, which with its pulsating rhythms invites you to dance rather than to walk in a measured manner. The piece ends with a hoedown, another American dance that gives the orchestra the opportunity to be exuberant and virtuosic, and can never be played fast enough.
