Programme notes: additional text

Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria" is one of the best-known and most popular sacred songs in the history of music. It was composed in 1825 and is based on a poem by Sir Walter Scott. The song is part of a cycle of seven songs that Schubert published as Op.52.

Schubert's "Ave Maria" is a hymn to the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. The text of the song consists of the Latin prayer Ave Maria, which embodies the Archangel Gabriel's message to Mary. Schubert's music creates a solemn and tranquil atmosphere that expresses the devotion and reverence of the faithful for the Virgin Mary.

The story behind "Ave Maria" goes back to a legend that says Schubert composed the song for his beloved friend who was dying. She is said to have heard the song in a musical vision that allowed her to go in peace.
