Additional info/contents The Catskill Mountains are a beautiful nature reserve in New York State, about 160 kilometers north of Manhattan, bordered to the east by the Hudson River. From the first moment Johan de Meij and his wife settled in Saugerties, a picturesque town in the Hudson River Valley, in 2008, he was captivated by the rich musical history of the Catskills. There he came across an interesting mix of American and European folk music, especially from Ireland and Scotland. It was probably not easy for him to choose from this rich selection. In the end he decided on the following songs: The Foggy Dew, LastWinter Was a Hard One, A Poor and Foreign, The BluestoneQuarries and The Arkansas Traveler. The music makes a detour to the striking The Old Tobacco Box before coming to a festive conclusion.
"Songs from the Catskills" was commissioned by Concordia College (Moorhead, MN) and Scott A. Jones, Director of Bands, for the 2011 Honor Band Weekend. The work was premiered at that event in April 2011 under the direction of the composer. The work is dedicated to Marilyn and Travis Rothlein, our dear friends and neighbors in the Catskills.
