Programme notes: additional text

Colonel Ludwig von Castaldo was an outstanding personality in the Austro-Hungarian military of the 19th century. His life and military career were characterized by bravery, leadership qualities and numerous awards. Ludwig von Castaldo was born in 1839. His military training began in the pioneer school company in Tulln. In 1855 he was appointed as a junior pioneer and transferred to the 6th Pioneer Battalion. On April 8, 1859, he was appointed second lieutenant, and shortly afterwards, first lieutenant.

In the 14th Infantry Regiment, Castaldo took part in the campaign in Italy and fought in the battles at Cava, Torre Beretti and Carpanjo as well as in the important battles at Magenta and Solferino. On June 15, 1859, he was appointed battalion adjutant. Promotion to first lieutenant followed on November 8, 1864. During the war year of 1866, Castaldo was seriously wounded at the Battle of Königgrätz. Despite his injury, he was promoted to captain 2nd class on July 30, 1866 and to captain 1st class in 1873. In 1874, he received imperial permission to wear foreign decorations. An annual wounded allowance of 200 guilders was granted to him in 1876 to help him heal his injuries.

On November 1, 1880, Castaldo was appointed major in the 73rd Infantry Regiment. Two years later, he was assigned to the staff of the 88th Infantry Regiment and later transferred to that regiment. He was appointed lieutenant colonel on May 1, 1887 in the 28th Infantry Regiment, which he took command of as colonel in 1890. In 1894 he was appointed commander of the 71st Infantry Brigade and in 1896 he was promoted to major general.

In 1898, the year of the tragic loss of Empress Elisabeth, Castaldo was appointed Landwehr divisional general in Vienna and in November of the same year was promoted to field marshal lieutenant. In 1900 he went into well-deserved retirement. His career was accompanied by numerous awards and decorations both from home and abroad. Colonel Ludwig von Castaldo died in Graz on July 11, 1910. In his honor, the "Castaldo March" was composed by Rudolf Novacek, a work that is often played at district music festivals throughout Austria. This march is a testament to the respect and appreciation that Castaldo was shown by his contemporaries.

The "Castaldo March" is a famous work by the Austrian composer Rudolf Novacek (1860-1929). This march was composed especially for the 28th k.u.k. Infantry Regiment and is a tribute to the regimental commander Colonel Ludwig Castaldo. The march reflects both the military discipline and musical creativity of the time and is a significant example of military music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Rudolf Novacek came from a musical family and began his career as a military musician. He served in various regiments and quickly made a name for himself as a gifted composer and conductor. Novacek composed a variety of works, including marches, waltzes and polkas, all of which testify to his deep musical education and talent.

The composition is characterized by a clear structure and catchy melodies. It quickly became a staple in the repertoire of many military bands and enjoyed great popularity both inside and outside the army. Its influence reached far beyond the borders of Austria-Hungary and it was performed in numerous countries. Today the march is considered a classic of military music and a testament to the skill and creativity of Rudolf Novacek.
