Additional info/contents Robert Stolz succeeded in composing three of his most beautiful and unforgettable songs in the middle of the First World War. "Im Prater blüh'n wieder die Bäume" - he composed the song in May 1916 to a text by Kurt Robitschek. In the spring of the previous year he had invented a no less beautiful melody to the words of Wilhelm Sterk: "Vienna becomes beautiful at night". And in the sad spring of 1918, despite all the gloom of the long lost war, he once again conjured up the most Viennese mood imaginable with a poem by Arthur Rebner: "This is spring in Vienna...". "Im Prater blüh'n wieder die Bäume" ("In the Prater the trees are in bloom again") was also the title of a film released in 1958 with music by Robert Stolz.

The trees are blooming again in the Prater: An exchange between film and music

The 1950 film "The Trees Are Blooming Again in the Prater," directed by Austrian director Wolfgang Liebeneiner, is a charming example of the resurgence of Viennese film culture after World War II. Conceived as a musical comedy, the film draws heavily on the composition of the same name by Robert Stolz, one of the most prominent composers of the Viennese music scene. Stolz, who was known for both his operettas and his film compositions, created a piece with this work that strikes both nostalgic and optimistic tones.

At the heart of both works is the theme of new beginnings and hope. The title itself, "The Trees Are Blooming Again in the Prater," suggests a return to bloom, both in terms of nature and interpersonal relationships. The film tells the story of love and optimism in the picturesque ambience of Vienna's Prater, a symbol of freedom and joie de vivre. This theme is impressively underscored by Stolz's music. The melodies are light and lively, often accompanied by a joyful, dance-like rhythm that reflects the protagonists' zest for life.

Stolz's music not only conveys the aesthetic beauty of Vienna but also transports nostalgic longings of the post-war period. The combination of catchy melodies and harmonic developments brings the characters' emotions to life and draws the audience into a dreamy world full of hope.

Musically, Stolz's composition is known for its catchy melodies, seasonal textures, and homophonic structures. The use of waltz rhythms and swinging melodies brings the spirit of Vienna to the listener's ears, while the harmonic progressions create an emotionally charged atmosphere. For the film, the music was skillfully woven into the narrative, both driving the plot forward and expressing the characters' inner emotions.

Siegmund Andraschek's arrangement for intermediate-level wind orchestra is particularly noteworthy. Andraschek succeeds in adapting the original lightness and freshness of Stolz's composition for wind orchestra without losing the charm of the original. The arrangement utilizes the diverse timbres of the wind instruments to enhance the piece's diverse moods and emotions. The woodwinds provide the melodic lines, while the brass instruments provide the harmonic foundation. The interplay creates a dynamic and diverse soundscape that appeals to both musicians and audiences.

Andraschek's arrangement has contributed significantly to the revival and redevelopment of Stolz's music in the wind orchestra scene. It enables ensembles to present the melodies and themes in a new light and reach a wider audience. This makes the work a memorable experience not only in concert performances, but also in educational programs and competitions where young musicians are introduced to Viennese musical traditions.

Overall, the film "The Trees Are Blooming Again in the Prater" and Robert Stolz's composition of the same name represent a harmonious combination of visual and musical art. Both works inspire with their message of hope and joie de vivre and promote an understanding of Viennese musical culture, while Siegmund Andraschek's arrangement contributes to preserving and passing on this tradition in an innovative way. The interplay of film and music creates a timeless experience that still touches the hearts of audiences in the 21st century.
