Additional info/contents	Hansel and Gretel is a late Romantic opera in three acts, created in the early 1890s. The music was written by Engelbert Humperdinck, and the libretto was written by his sister Adelheid Wette, based on the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel from the Brothers Grimm's Children's and Household Tales. The authors titled the work "Fairy Tale in Three Pictures." Humperdinck called his work a "Kinderstubenweihfestspiel" (Children's Consecration Festival Play), an ironic reference to Richard Wagner's opera Parsifal. Hansel and Gretel was first performed on December 23, 1893, at the Court Theater in Weimar under the direction of Richard Strauss. The opera, which runs approximately two hours, is now a frequently performed opera house repertoire and is performed particularly frequently during Advent.
