Programme notes: additional text

The waltz "Fairy Tales from the Orient" is a dedication composition for the Sultan of Constantinople. The work was to be one of a series of works in which Strauß deliberately sought to expand the waltz form and in doing so sought to approach symphonic music. The new waltz thus deliberately continued the series of these works - later referred to as "Alterswalzer", which included the "Kaiser-Walzer", op. 437, and the dedication to Johannes Brahms, "Seid umschlungen, Millionen", op. 443. This waltz is particularly attractive due to its exotic colouring and elegiac minor passages, and is far better suited for wind music than the well-known Danube waltz due to its relatively simple, low-lying string section and the wind dominance of the original.
