Programme notes:
First, Smetana presents the sources represented by two flutes.
In the following, the main motif of the Moldau is played by the strings and then taken over by the entire orchestra. Afterwards, a hunting scene is heard in the woods, which is characterized by the sound of the horns.
The Vltava continues to wind and flows past a peasant wedding in the countryside. One can hear the cheerful dances of the wedding party in the main motive.
In the meantime it has become night and the river flows in the bright light of the moonlight past tender nymphs dancing a round dance.
Then the main motif of the Vltava appears again, which has now become a broad river.
At the Sankt Johann Rapids the tension reaches its climax. Timpani beats and loud brass instruments illustrate the danger of the many rapids and the threateningly rushing water.
After the rapids, the Vltava has regained its calm and now flows broadly along.
At the end the Vysehrad motive appears before the Vltava disappears at the mouth of the river.
