Programme notes: additional text

This title is one of the fastest in the entire operetta. If you are honest, Prince Danilo prefers to move in a cultivated semi-world environment rather than on the diplomatic scene. He generally thinks little of his work as head of state. The grisettes lived as freely as the men had always allowed themselves to at that time; and that was something incredibly frivolous at the time. They only took what men had always been entitled to. Lehár manages to pour this cheeky way of life into music.
