Additional info/contents In 2014, the composer was commissioned by the city of Bitburg to write a piece for symphonic wind orchestra that would set to music and reflect 1300 years of history.
Rainer Serwe was guided by several ideas in the implementation of this project:
1) One of the possible original names of the city is Beda, a term that is still ubiquitous in Bitburg today. This sequence of tones B-E-D-A symbolizes the construction of the city, but also the twofold destruction: once by the moving French in 1689 and by the allied troops in 1944.
2) Over the centuries, Bitburg belonged to different ruling families and thus to different countries and empires. This exciting and eventful history is made clear by quotations from the respective national anthems. Parts of the hymns of Luxembourg, Spain, France and Austria can be heard. Prussia is characterized by a continuous and military rhythm, whereby the bars 165-166 can certainly be understood as a quotation of today's German national anthem, which was used for the first time in this time. The American anthem points to the occupying power of America after the Second World War, but also to the friendship with the Americans stationed here, who helped significantly with the construction of Bitburg.
3) Thematically, Bitburg is represented by two contrasting themes, a calm and introverted theme introduced in the flute (bars 28 - 39) and a faster, heroic theme (bars 57 - 71). These two themes are repeatedly taken up and varied.
4) The history of the city of Bitburg is framed by a fanfare, which stands for today's bloom of Bitburg, but is also a gift for the anniversary in 2015.
