Programme notes: additional text

This German-style march, written by Austrian-born composer Herman Dostal, was originally a choral song in the opera 'Der Fliegende Rittmeister'.
The melody then advanced to become one of the most famous marches in German-speaking countries in the version for military orchestra. Today the air march is assigned to the staff of the Luftwaffe Command and the Air Transport Squadron 62 as a troop march and at the same time the "secret anthem" of the entire Luftwaffe of the Bundeswehr. With "Alte Kameraden" or "Preußens Gloria" he is one of the most frequently played pieces from the repertoire of German military music corps, especially on civilian occasions. Entertainment musicians such as James Last and André Rieu have adapted the Fliegermarsch in their respective styles, and even amateur orchestras like to intonate the lively, dashing piece.
Colonel George S. Howard led this march with the AIT Force Band of the United States in Berlin after the war and said the effect was "electrifying".
