This waltz is an absolute masterpiece! It stood completely wrongly in the shadow of Strauß's world successes. First performed on 18.11.1866, the waltz sounded for the first time under Daniel Barenboim 2014 at the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic! For the first time, a truly successful transcription is available here, ideally suited for wind orchestras!

The summer of 1866 brought the defeat of the Austrian army at Königgrätz. The subsequent peace agreement meant a loss of territory for Austria and the rise of Prussia to the dominant power in Europe. In his waltz "Friedenspalmen", Joseph Strauß hints above all at the prevailing war fatigue among the population at the time. The title page of the piano edition shows an angel holding a branch of a palm tree. The waltz is characterized by melancholy on the one hand and joy at life returning to normal on the other.

Josef Strauss’ Waltz “Palmen of Peace,” Op. 207: A Musical Testimony of Melancholy and Joy

Josef Strauss’s waltz “Palmen of Peace,” Op. 207, was composed in 1866, a time of profound political and social upheaval. Following Austria’s defeat at the Battle of Königgrätz and the subsequent Treaty of Prague, Vienna was in a phase of recovery and reconstruction. The composition reflects this ambivalent mood: on the one hand, relief at the end of the fighting, and on the other, melancholy over the losses suffered and the changed political landscape. The world premiere with the Vienna Philharmonic underscores the work’s significance as a symbol of hope and new beginnings.

The waltz “Palmen of Peace,” Op. 207, by Josef Strauss was composed in 1866, a time of profound political and social upheaval. Josef Strauss, often overshadowed by his more famous brother Johann Strauss II, created "Friedenspalmen" (Peace Palms), a waltz that added a profound and emotionally complex dimension to the genre. The work combines typical waltz elements with melancholic passages that sensitively capture the mood of post-war Vienna.

A musical analysis of the waltz reveals a characteristic duality between cheerful, lively sections and reflective, almost elegiac passages. The lively waltz rhythms and exuberant melodies embody Viennese society's return to conviviality and optimism. At the same time, harmonic modulations in minor keys and slow, lyrical themes convey a deep melancholy. These contrasts reflect the ambivalence of the era: the joy of peace and the grief for the fallen.

The instrumentation, particularly the use of strings and woodwinds, underscores these emotional contrasts. Josef Strauss succeeded in creating an atmospheric density that oscillates between hope and melancholy in the listener. The composition demonstrates his ability to express complex emotions in a musically accessible form.

The arrangement for wind orchestra by Erwin Loos

Erwin Loos's arrangement for wind orchestra plays a special role in the reception of the work. Loos preserved the emotional depth of the original composition but adapted the timbres and instrumentation to the possibilities of a wind orchestra. The woodwind and brass instruments take over the melodic and harmonic functions of the strings, creating a transparent yet powerful sound. The melancholic passages, in particular, benefit from the warm richness of the wind instruments, while the rhythmic precision of the wind orchestra instrumentation lends the waltz rhythms a radiant, almost solemn quality.

Loos's arrangement has established the waltz as a staple of wind band literature. This version is particularly suitable for festive occasions where the interplay of joy and melancholy is thematically appropriate. The arrangement underscores the universality of the composition and demonstrates how timeless musical statements can be reinterpreted by different ensembles.

* “Peace Palms,” Op. 207, is not only a musical document of post-war Vienna but also an example of the emotional complexity of the waltz genre. Josef Strauss succeeded in capturing the mood of an era in music—between sorrow and hope, between past and future. Erwin Loos's arrangement has preserved this message and reinterpreted it for wind orchestra, so that the work continues to serve as a symbol of reconciliation and new beginnings. *
