Programme notes: additional text

The weather phenomenon of the "Tauernwind" in the Austrian Alps has always had a fascinating and sometimes challenging effect on the inhabitants of the region. The impressive composition "Tauernwind" by the Carinthian musician Josef Abwerzger, who for years has led his life in summer as a cattle herder in harmony with nature and reflects the influences of the mountains and the weather in his music, is connected with this natural spectacle.

The "Tauernwind" is a well-known meteorological phenomenon in the Alps, especially in the area of the Hohe Tauern, an impressive mountain massif in Austria. This wind is caused by the temperature differences between the higher mountain peaks and the lower valleys. During the day, the mountain slopes warm up while the valleys remain relatively cool. At night, this effect is reversed: the mountains cool down quickly while the valleys are still warm. These temperature differences create a strong wind that flows through the valleys and is known as the "Tauern wind". This weather phenomenon can have a significant impact on both the weather and life in the alpine regions.

Josef Abwerzger, a native of Carinthia, has dedicated his life to working as a cattle herder in the Alps. As an experienced herdsman, he is very familiar with the vagaries of nature and the changes in the weather. But Abwerzger is not only a man of nature, he is also a gifted musician and composer. His deep connection with the mountain world and his experiences as a pastoralist inspired him to record his impressions in the composition "Tauernwind".

In his composition "Tauernwind" Josef Abwerzger creates an impressive musical portrait of the Tauern wind and its effects on the alpine environment. The music is characterised by powerful melodies that capture the wind in its stormy intensity and majestic beauty. Abwerzger uses traditional instruments such as the accordion and the violin to weave the sounds of the mountains and valleys into his music.

Josef Abwerzger's "Tauernwind" is not only a musical representation of a weather phenomenon, but also a tribute to nature and life in the mountains. His music tells of the challenges and joys of being a pastoralist, of the beauty and unpredictability of the alpine landscape and of the deep connection between man and nature.
