Additional info/contents Philip Sparke's composition "Wind in the Reeds" is a work of medium difficulty for bassoon (or baritone saxophone) and wind orchestra. Commissioned by Deena Draycott, it serves as a tribute to John Watson, a military musician, teacher, and bassoonist. The piece opens with a pastoral Andantino, in which the bassoon solo unfolds a lyrical melody accompanied by gentle orchestral textures. The following section, in Moderato e ritmico, explores the technical and expressive possibilities of the bassoon, challenging the soloist with rapid passages and dynamic contrasts. Solo cadenzas act as transitions, adding further emotional depth to the work.
