Additional info/contents The Ukrainian composer Dmitri Stepanovich Bortnjanskij (1751-1825) was a member of the court choir in Saint Petersburg as a young boy and then studied in Bologna, Rome and Naples. In 1779 he returned to Saint Petersburg, where he was appointed state councillor and director of the court choir. From this choir he formed an ensemble of European standing. In his works he combined Russian and Western elements to create a polyphonic style that he had become acquainted with in Italy. His work "Kol slaven nasch gospod Sionje" ("How glorious is our Lord in Zion") still plays an important role in military music ceremonies in various countries. In addition to its use in Russia and other Slavic countries, the chorale is particularly notable for its place in the Grand Tattoo in Germany. Bortniansky composed the chorale between 1790 and 1801. It quickly became very popular, although it was actually written for the St. Petersburg Masonic Lodge, whose leading member was M. M. Kheraskov (1733-1807), who in turn had introduced Bortniansky into the Lodge. Before the Imperial Anthem was composed by Lvov, Bortniansky's successor in the Court Choir, "Kol Slaven" was often played instead of the anthem. The song was of course also used by the army on various occasions. Above all, however, it was heard every evening as part of the Tattoo. The chorale's journey to Germany began in St. Petersburg in 1824, when the pastor Johannes Goßner, who had converted to the Protestant faith, set the chorale to the lyrics "I pray to the power of love" by the German hymn writer Gerhard Tersteegen (1697-1769). It has been known in this form in the German-speaking world ever since. Through his work in Berlin (1826-1858), Goßner passed on the melody, which he had learned in St. Petersburg, along with the lyrics, to the court of King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia. The performance of the chorale goes back to a so-called "monster concert" (Concert monstre) in 1838 in honor of the Russian Tsar Nicholas I, who was in Berlin on a state visit. The "director of all music choirs of the Guard Corps", Wilhelm Wieprecht, played the Grand Tattoo (then called the "Russian Tattoo") he had newly created at the end of a demanding concert. Although other melodies were used to replace Bortnjanskij's work on several occasions, it was finally made compulsory for the Grand Tattoo - albeit only in the German army - by means of a central service regulation. The only exception to this is Bavaria, where the "Bavarian Military Prayer" by Johann Caspar Aiblinger (1779-1867) is played in its place.
