Programme notes: "Außer Rand und Band" is an idiom in German and is used when someone is boisterous and exuberant. This expression originally comes from the language of the cooper, also called coopers. These are craftsmen who make barrels or tubs from wood by assembling bent timbers into corresponding vessels. If, during the production process, the wooden pieces jump out of the holders of the iron "bands" that provide additional support, the whole barrel collapses. The wood is therefore "out of control".
