Additional info/contents	Die Waffen nieder (Lay Down Your Arms!) describes the life and work of the Austrian pacifist, peace researcher and writer Bertha von Suttner. In the introduction of the piece, recumbent tones are heard, accompanied by a war drum. Afterwards, a passionate melody describes Suttner's dream of a society without weapons. Bertha von Suttner's task was to report on the events of the Russian-Turkish war. These wars and struggles in 19th century Europe are reflected in a fugue in the second part of the piece. At the climax of this part, Johann Sebastian Bach's "Komm, süßer Tod!" is quoted. In the last part of the piece, the melody of Suttner's Dream is heard again. It now begins very softly, but is somewhat faster and is in a different time signature. Gradually, several instruments are added and one can feel the rising energy. All this is meant to symbolise Suttner's success. Although Suttner was unable to prevent the First World War, her ideas influenced the whole of Europe. Her novel "Die Waffen nieder - Lay down your Arms" was translated into 27 languages and was the most important book of anti-war literature. In addition, Bertha von Suttner was the first woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905.
