Programme notes: additional text

The composition "Trumpeters Legacy" by Stefan Ebner is a striking work for eight trumpets that celebrates the tradition and versatility of the trumpet. By using fragments from famous classical works, Ebner creates a unique musical collage that both challenges the technical skills of the trumpeters and reflects the rich history of classical music.

"Trumpeters Legacy" is divided into several sections, each representing different tempos and moods. The first section, titled "Allegro", is particularly dynamic and marks the powerful beginning of the composition. Here the first three trumpets are prominently introduced with the motif from Richard Wagner's "Entry of the Guests" from the opera Tannhäuser. This celebratory theme sets a succinct and imposing tone for the entire section.

During this theme, in the fourth bar, the seventh and eighth trumpets join in with a striking motif from Wagner's "Siegfried". This combination creates a contrasting yet harmonious fusion of two great Wagnerian works. Ebner uses the different timbres and pitches of the trumpets to highlight the complexity and depth of these musical quotations.

Ebner's skillful integration of familiar themes continues as the sixth trumpet takes up a theme from Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" later in the Allegro. This powerful yet lyrical theme brings a new dimension to the composition, which is further enhanced by the addition of the seventh trumpet with Georges Bizet's "Carmen." This combination shows Ebner's ability to seamlessly combine contrasting musical ideas, creating a layered sonic landscape.

Following the Allegro, several sections of alternating tempos and expressions follow, including a majestic Maestoso, another Allegro, followed by a Moderato, Andante, Andantino, Slow, and finally a concluding Allegro. Each of these sections uses different stylistic and technical means to show the expressive range of the trumpet. The trumpeters have to master not only a wide range of dynamic nuances, but also technical challenges.

"Trumpeters Legacy" is not only a technical challenge for the performers, but also a musical feast for the listeners. Stefan Ebner succeeds in building a bridge between different eras and styles of classical music and uniting them in a modern, innovative composition for trumpet ensemble. The intelligent use of well-known themes, the harmonious integration of various musical fragments and the varied structure make this work a remarkable contribution to contemporary wind music.
