Additional info/contents "The Legend of Ratu Kidul" takes us into Indonesian mythology, to the island of Java:
A long time ago, the Queen of the Southern Sea was a sweet, charming girl. She was the daughter of Praboe Moending Wangi, the darling of the entire royal court and the local population. Her royal father was very attached to his daughter. Her name was Dewi Kadita, but many called her Dewi Srengege or Princess of Wrath. Praboe Meonding Wangi had wanted an heir to the throne, but Dewi Kadita's mother could not grant him this wish. He then took a second wife named Poetri Moentiara, who was very jealous of the lovely princess and her mother. She urged the king to banish the two rivals from the court. However, Praboe Moending Wangi did not agree. He loved his first wife and his daughter.

His second wife gave him a healthy heir to the throne, but the prince remained stubborn. Poetri Moentiara then summoned the famous witch Djahil. She promised her a princely reward if Dewi Kandita and her mother were banished. Djahil reflected and then recited this rapal (magic spell): "May leprosy strike them both." Soon after, this terrible disease appeared in mother and daughter. According to the laws of the kingdom, both had to be banished to the wild forest on the high mountains. King Moending Wangi carried out this law with a bleeding heart. So the two, covered in terrible ulcers, set off for the wild forest. The whole country was in great mourning, except for Poetri Moentiara, the king's second wife, who had achieved her goal. Hard times began for the princess. A hermit lived in the forest and took pity on the mother and daughter. The princess could not bear the shame and died after a few days.

Now Dewi Kadita was all alone. Fortunately, there was still the hermit who provided food and shelter in a temple grotto. He bandaged her festering wounds, but could not ease her mental anguish. Dewi Kadita became more and more bitter and left the hermit. She moved from village to village towards the south. So Dewi Kadita walked further and further until she finally reached the shore of the southern sea. She climbed onto a high rock and looked out at the sea that spread out before her.

The deep green, partly blue water invited her to jump. In the coolness of the water she would be able to forget her suffering and pain. Stirred by these thoughts, the princess jumped from the rock into the cold arms of the deep sea. The gods had accompanied her on her arduous path through life and were filled with deep compassion. Therefore, they transformed Dewi Kadita into the powerful commander of the spirit world, Ratu Kidul, who still resides in her magnificent palace under the sea.
