Programme notes: additional text

The composition "Steirischer Liedermarsch ’ was written by Anton Stritzko, a composer who became famous for his works in the field of traditional brass music. This composition embodies the characteristic sounds and musical traditions of Styria in a special way and is a testimony to the regional style of music with a mixture of march and folk music elements.

Stritzko's original composition is characterised by a rousing melody carried by rhythmically distinctive march structures. The march contains typical folk melodies that are performed with a light yet energetic swing. The focus is on clear, traditional harmonies which, in combination with dynamic phrases, convey the charm of the Styrian musical tradition. The composition focuses on catchy themes that remain in the audience's ear and are easy to hum - one reason why it is so popular with music societies.

arrangement by Stefan Ebner for modern wind orchestra

The arrangement by Stefan Ebner takes the work into a new dimension by adapting it for the modern wind orchestra. This arrangement gives the "Steirischer Liedermarsch ’ a fresh sonority by retaining the traditional elements while adding contemporary musical arrangements. Ebner's arrangement adds orchestral colours by using the registers of a modern wind orchestra in a variety of ways. The low brass provide a powerful foundation, while the woodwinds contribute a rich tonal nuance through ornamental passages and melodic overlays.

Stefan Ebner succeeds in preserving the essence of Stritzko's composition while adapting it to the demands and sound possibilities of today's wind orchestras. He reinforces dynamic contrasts, modernises the harmonisation at certain points and integrates rhythmic subtleties that enrich the overall picture of the piece. Particularly noteworthy is the balance between traditional motifs and new orchestral accents, which lend the piece a modern freshness without losing its connection to Styrian musical culture.
