Additional info/contents	“Come, Sweet Freedom” is based on the folk song “All My Trials”. The origins of this traditional song, which is particularly popular in Africa and America, are unclear, but due to its biblical and religious content, it has been classified as a spiritual. The lyrics describe the harsh reality of slavery and see death as the only way out of bondage and suffering and towards peace and freedom. In the most famous verse of the song, a mother sings to her small child: “Hush little baby, don’t you cry. You know your mama’s bound to die. All my trials, Lord, soon will be over.” Based on this powerful message, the American composer James L. Hosay chose the title “Come, Sweet Freedom” for his very personal, moving musical setting of the well-known classic. The piece is much more than just an arrangement. Starting from a dialogue between oboe and clarinet, Hosay develops a moving choral fantasy that expresses the music's message, which is both deeply sad and hopeful, in a special way.
