Definition/synonyms |
Mark tree, also called chime tree, wind chimes or bar chimes, is a percussion instrument consisting of a number of metal bars of varying lengths (usually less than 25 cm). These are suspended close together on a support and are struck with a mallet or fingernails from the highest to the lowest bar (or vice versa) in one go to create an "introductory" sound effect. The actual sound is created by striking the adjacent metal bars against each other. This produces a descending sound similar to the glissando of a harp, whose strings are played from top to bottom, but with a metallic timbre. |
