Chimes are metal bars of varying lengths that together form a percussion instrument. The bars are typically under 25 cm long and arranged from smallest to largest. The player uses a mallet or their fingers to create a unified sound by striking the bars from the tallest to the shortest, or vice versa. The bars strike each other, producing the desired tone. The sound is similar to that of a harp, but with a metallic quality. Chimes can also be made of wood, bamboo, shell, or glass. They are primarily used in jazz and pop ballads. |
