Additional info/contents The "Old Dutch Prayer of Thanksgiving" (or "We Come to Pray") is not only a musical work, but also a cultural heritage, interwoven with the political, social, and religious currents of its time. Its melody, based on a folk song, and its simple yet expressive musical language made it an important composition in the Dutch musical tradition. Information about the "Old Dutch Prayer of Thanksgiving" ("We come to pray")

The "Old Dutch Thanksgiving Prayer," known under the title "We Step Out to Pray" (Dutch: "Wilt heden nu treden"), is a significant work of Dutch music history, published in the songbook "Nederlandtsche Gedenck-clanck" (1626), compiled by Adrianus Valerius. This collection was a tribute to the heroic achievements of the Dutch people and represented a compilation of sacred and secular songs that strengthened national sentiments during the Eighty Years' War against Spanish rule.

The work was written at a crucial moment in Dutch history, when the conflict between the Netherlands and Spain, the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648), intensified. Nationalist sentiment gained momentum, particularly after the victory of the Dutch troops over the Spanish at the Battle of Turnhout in 1597. This military conflict gave people a reason to return to faith in gratitude and hope, which is reflected in the creation of the Thanksgiving Prayer.

The melody of the "Old Dutch Thanksgiving Prayer" is closely linked to an old folk song: "Hey, wilder dan wilt, wie sal mij temmen." This melody was popular in the 16th century and displays typical characteristics of Dutch folk music of that time.

The Thanksgiving Prayer has a simple, strophic form, meaning the text is divided into equal, repeated musical sections. The harmonies are clear and easy to follow, facilitating congregational participation. Repetition and catchy melodies promote memorability, allowing singers to easily learn and sing the text by heart. These features make the piece an accessible and popular choice for congregational and church music and an integral part of Dutch cultural heritage.

The "Old Dutch Thanksgiving Prayer" serves as a symbol of the solidarity and faith of the Dutch people during turbulent times. It represents hope for peace, gratitude for battles won, and loyalty to national identity.

Its publication in the "Nederlandtsche Gedenck-clanck" is of great significance not only musically but also culturally. This songbook served to strengthen the moral and national identity of the Dutch during a time of uncertainty by collecting songs that embodied the spirit of resistance and hope.
