Programme notes: additional text

The march "From good old times (Post March)" by Adolf Vančura is a classic of traditional brass music, which gets its special charm from the combination of nostalgia, musicality and the arrangement by Hans Kliment. This work is exemplary of the march music of the Danube Monarchy, which captivates the audience with lively rhythms, catchy melodies and a strong emotional charisma.

Adolf Vančura was an Austrian composer and conductor who left a lasting impression with his extraordinary contribution to brass music. His life was marked by ups and downs: despite his talent, he had to abandon his studies at the Vienna Conservatory due to financial difficulties. Nevertheless, he did not let himself be discouraged and entered the service of the municipality of Vienna. There he led numerous bands and choirs, which gave him the opportunity to further develop his musical ideas. With around 250 works, he left behind an extensive and diverse musical legacy.

The march "From the good old days"

This march is one of Vančura's most important works and reflects a nostalgic view of past eras. As the title suggests, the music evokes images and emotions from the "good old days". The melodic structure and harmonic processing are characterized by a warm, almost romantic sound language that is reminiscent of the rich tradition of Austrian brass music.

The instrumentation follows the typical style of the time, but is nevertheless sophisticated and detailed, so that the various timbres of the wind orchestra are excellently presented. The role of the brass instruments, which form the backbone of the march with powerful fanfares and expressive melodies, deserves particular emphasis. At the same time, the woodwinds provide elegance and lightness with their delicate runs and embellishments.

Hans Kliment, himself an experienced arranger and musician, has created a timeless interpretation with his arrangement of the march that both preserves the spirit of the original and meets the sound requirements of modern wind orchestras. His work is characterized by a clear structure and a balanced sound, which further underlines the appeal of Vančura's composition. The precise dynamics and careful articulation expressed in the arrangement give the work a special brilliance.
