Additional info/contents Bohemian Rhapsody is a song by the British rock band Queen. It was written by Freddie Mercury for the band's 1975 album A Night at the Opera. The song has no chorus, instead consisting of several sections: a ballad segment ending with a guitar solo, an operatic passage, and a hard rock section. At the time, it was the most expensive single ever made and it remains one of the most elaborate recordings in popular music history.
The text was written by Freddie Mercury and leaves some puzzles unanswered. "Bohemian" is the English word for an artist (and member of the "Bohemian") who defies conventions and lives in disregard of social standards. A "Rhapsody" is a free form of music. Since the title also means "Bohemian piece of music", it is also a play on words and a reference to works of musical romanticism such as Brahms' "Hungarian Dances". The text quotes terms from the Koran, Arabic and Hebrew such as "Bismillah" ("In the Name of Allah" is the opening formula of most of the suras of the Koran and is often found on Islamic tombstones), Scaramouche (a type that appears as a boastful coward) or Beelzebub (devil). Other words included in the text - and quoted without any textual connection - are the repetitively recited Galileo, Fandango or Figaro. Composer Mercury himself stated that they were randomly rhyming nonsense. The entire text - unusual in pop music - has no refrain or strophic form. The musicologist Hartmut Fladt writes about the piece: "The whole thing is a declaration of love to the opera of the late 19th century, which, however, is cleverly staged with means of the 20th century. The song is a very intelligent piece of postmodern pop culture."
