Additional info/contents	This German film, based on the book by Lothar Buchheim, has since become a classic. Highly vivid, catchy, and expressive, this score certainly stands on its own. Doldinger connects the title theme almost suggestively with the respective "appearance" of the submarine. The version for wind orchestra also begins with the approach and surfacing of the U-96, with special effects such as engine noises and sonar provided by a synthesizer. After the "surfacing," a roll call is musically described; fanfare-like and polyphonic signals lead musically to the attack. Timpani, like those on galley ships, trumpet interjections symbolizing gunshots, and horn blasts propel the boat forward. The two following episodes, "Departure" and "Remembrance," are flashbacks. During the departure, the theme is taken up again very quietly, leading into a romantic, minor-key memory. The score in the arrangement for symphonic wind orchestra, unlike the film, has a happy ending. With "Homecoming" the odyssey ends in an exuberant and all-encompassing conclusion.
