Additional info/contents	His widely known overture "Dichter und Bauer" was written as part of the theatre music for the comedy of the same name by Karl Elmar. For the premiere in Vienna in August 1846, suitable opening music was sought. The poet asked the young conductor Franz von Suppé, who accepted the commission despite the limited time available. Actually he arranged music that had been performed earlier, but without success. The publisher Josef Aibl attended the premiere and immediately fell under the spell of this music that he immediately bought the publishing rights for the ridiculous sum (+/- 8 DM). Suppé was short of money and agreed. The overture became a world success and the composer regretted this detrimental business all his life, because the publisher printed edition after edition and sold no less than 52 different arrangements for many different instrumentations. The story is about the incomprehension of a guardian for his foster child who does not give up her lover. For even though this young man is a farmer, he is at the same time an unsurpassed poet, who even outshines a poet from the city in a literary duel, which only increases his prestige in the eyes of his beloved. Thanks to an old farmer, the story had a happy ending. It is often said that the international success of this overture is due to the arrangements for the wind orchestra.
