Additional info/contents	John Davenport was a pseudonym for the real author Otis Blackwell, who registered the song under his stepfather's name. Otis Blackwell did not want to register as a co-writer of the song under his own name for fear of getting into trouble with his record label Jay-Dee Records, with whom he was still under contract as a performer. Blackwell offered six of his compositions for sale on Christmas Eve 1955 to Aaron "Goldie" Goldmark, head of Shalimar Music Corp. music publishing, for $25 a song. Among them were Don't Be Cruel and Fever, recorded as a demo with Blackwell's vocals and his own piano accompaniment, the rhythm improvised by hitting an index card. Quelle/Source: Wikipedia
