The Gendarmerie in Austria and the Gendarmerie March by Rudolf Kummerer

The Gendarmerie has played a significant role in the history of Austria. Originally established in the 19th century as a paramilitary police force, it was responsible for maintaining law and order in rural areas. The Gendarmerie was not only responsible for fighting crime, but also for conducting traffic surveillance and securing public events. Its appearance and the traditions associated with it helped to form a specific image of authority and security in Austrian society.

The Gendarmerie existed until the police reform in 2005, when it was integrated into the Federal Police. Despite these changes, the Gendarmerie's legacy lives on, not least through cultural expressions such as music and marches.

The Gendarmerie March by Rudolf Kummerer

One of the most famous musical tributes to the institution of the gendarmerie is the "Gendarmerie March", composed by Rudolf Kummerer. Kummerer, an Austrian composer and arranger, created a piece with this march that captures both the severity and pride of the gendarmerie in musical form. The march is characterized by characteristic melodies and a rhythmic pulse that conveys both military discipline and a certain solemnity.

The composition reflects the tradition of marching music, but at the same time is closely linked to the identity of the gendarmerie. The melody is catchy and supports the idea of camaraderie and a sense of duty. The use of brass and percussion reinforces the martial character of the piece, while woodwind passages provide a softer, more human touch.

Hans Kliment's arrangement of the "Gendarmerie March" for wind orchestra brings the work closer to a wider audience and enables a wide range of musicians to perform the composition. Kliment, himself a renowned arranger and conductor, was able to skilfully convey Kummerer's harmonic structures and instrumental requirements. In his version, the varied instrumentation of a wind orchestra is used creatively to highlight the different musical colors and dynamics suggested in the original work.

The wind orchestra arrangement has the advantage that it can be played in both concert and festive settings, which further increases the popularity of the work. At festivals, parades and official occasions, the march not only reminds us of the gendarmerie, but also of the tradition of military brass music in Austria, which has a firm place in the country's cultural life.
