Programme notes: Richard Wagner's "Lohengrin" and Hans Kliment's "Great Fantasy" - The Adaptation of a Romantic Opera for Advanced Wind Orchestra Richard Wagner's opera "Lohengrin" is one of the most important works of German Romantic opera. It combines medieval legends with a story about trust, doubt, love, and the limits of human understanding. Wagner himself wrote the libretto. The composition was written between 1846 and 1848. The opera premiered on August 28, 1850, at the Court Theatre in Weimar, conducted by Franz Liszt, as Wagner himself was living in exile in Switzerland at the time. • Plot and Meaning The story centers on Elsa of Brabant. She is accused of murdering her brother, Gottfried. When she faces a trial by combat, an unknown knight appears in a boat drawn by a swan. He declares his willingness to fight for Elsa and marry her. His only condition is that she must never ask his name or origin. The knight defeats Elsa's enemies and marries her. However, under Ortrud's influence, Elsa's mistrust grows. Finally, she asks the forbidden question. The knight is then forced to reveal his identity: he is Lohengrin, the son of the Grail King Parzival. With this revelation, his time in Brabant ends, and he returns to the Grail world. The opera thus explores the contrast between unconditional trust and the human need for certainty.
