The Upper Austrian state anthem "Hoamatg'sang" and its arrangement for wind orchestra by Emil Rameis

The Upper Austrian state anthem "Hoamatg'sang" is an important musical and cultural heritage of the federal state of Upper Austria. It was composed and set to music in 1884 by Hans Schnopfhagen (1845–1908), with the text by Franz Stelzhamer (1802–1874). The song is a tribute to the scenic beauty and the Upper Austrians' attachment to their homeland and is often sung on ceremonial occasions and official events.

Hans Schnopfhagen was an Upper Austrian musician and composer who became known in particular for his folk music works. The "Hoamatg'sang" became the unofficial anthem of Upper Austria in the late 19th century and was officially recognized as the state anthem in 1952. The text by Franz Stelzhamer is written in Upper Austrian dialect and is characterized by a deep connection with the homeland and nature. The melody of the song is folk-song-like, catchy and emotional, which contributes to its great popularity.

The arrangement by Emil Rameis

Emil Rameis was a respected military musician, composer and teacher who was intensively involved with brass music in Austria. His arrangement of the "Hoamatg'sang" for wind orchestra is one of the best known and most frequently performed versions of the song. Rameis managed to transfer the simple and folk-song-like melody into a sonorous and solemn orchestral version without losing the original character of the song.

Through his instrumentation he created a version that can be played in both smaller brass band ensembles and in large orchestras. In particular, the warm sounds of the woodwind instruments and the celebratory support of the brass instruments reinforce the festive and sublime character of the anthem. His arrangement is still an integral part of many brass music repertoires in Upper Austria and beyond.
