In many stalls offered for sale The merchants offered their wares for sale, which on Christmas Eve To delight the expectant crowds of children, And, to whet the shopping appetite, They sample the instruments for sale. There sounds in wild confusion The cuckoo call, the quail call, the bugle call, The gun shrieks, the drum rolls, And the chirping of a nightingale Mingles with the musicians' joyful sound.
