From the Cycladic civilization (from 3000 BC) through the Minoan occupation to Byzantine rule, ancient ruins, marble quarrying, and the volcanic eruption on Santorini have shaped the region. Today, the islands are known for their distinctive white and blue architecture and cultural diversity. Hardy Mertens' composition "Kyklades," Op. 186, is a symphonic poem for intermediate-level wind orchestra that musically captures the islands' unique characteristics in five movements. Through varying time signatures, keys, and tempos—from moderate to very fast—Mertens succeeds in sonically portraying the scenic and cultural diversity of the Cyclades.
