Programme notes: additional text

By Mater dolorosa one means the Mother of Sorrows, applied to Mary, the mother of Jesus. The pictorial representation of the Mother of Sorrows appears either standing or sitting with one or seven swords (symbolising the seven sorrows of Mary) in her chest. In a broader sense, the "Pietá", the Madonna with the body of Christ in her arms, is also to be interpreted as the "Mater dolorosa".

The sacred music for wind orchestra entitled "Mater dolorosa" by Gottfried Veit was composed in 1986, is written in a highly romantic style and aims to acoustically recall the unspeakable sufferings of the Mother of God through the use of dissonances, preludes, fallacies and more. This deeply felt sacred music should be performed in an equally deeply felt way.
