Additional info/contents This symphony, composed in 1961-1962, was orchestrated by Désiré Dondeyne and was chosen in 1964 as test piece for the highest division of the World Music Contest in Kerkrade, The Netherlands. It is a musical description of Lancen's trip to New-York. You can hear successively the arrival at Manhattan, a walk in the poetic world of Central Park, a visit of "black" Harlem, a walk on the hectic Broadway Avenue and finally the admiration for the Rockefeller Building. Here is a splendid musical tribute to this unique metropolis.

1. Arrival in Manhattan: Slowly the ocean giant enters the port of New York. It is still foggy, but suddenly the contours of the metropolis appear.
2. Central Park: A Sunday walk in splendid weather through the large park in the middle of the city. There is a lively life, children play together.
3. Harlem: We come to Harlem, the district of the blacks. The trumpet begins in jazz style with a lamenting recitative, which later returns in other instruments as well. Homesick for distant countries...?
4. Broadway: Probably the most famous and coveted boulevard in the world. As if the whole city were on its feet, it sprays here from the glitter of the "boards that mean the world", from glowing commercials, in short: from joie de vivre!
5. Rockefeller Building: The composer sees the contours of one of the largest buildings in the world. He develops the initial theme into an apotheosis of admiration.
