Composer Van der Roost, Jan
Difficulty level 4
Duration 5:15
Additional info/contents The work Metalla was commissioned by the Altenkirchen District Association in Germany and dedicated to Ottomar Jung. Composer Jan Van der Roost conducted the first performance of the piece, which was played by the Altenkirchen District Association Youth Orchestra on March 25, 1999. The region around Altenkirchen is known for its iron ore mines, which find musical expression in the gloomy mood of the introduction (Andante misterioso). This effect is complemented by overlapping seventh intervals, orchestral crescendos, a sequence of sweeping chords, and the presentation of most of the themes by the middle registers of the orchestra.

The dynamic section (Allegro energico) following the introduction is characterized by striking figures in the brass, and a second motif appears, a kind of rippling movement that describes the Sieg River, an important element in the landscape around Altenkirchen. The work concludes with a final theme that recurs several times in different guises. After a brief repetition of the seventh intervals of the beginning, a final radiant chord signals the end of the work.
